New Zealand in the spring is pure magic. The snow is still melting off the Southern Alps, the flowers start to bloom, and the waterfalls are roaring. But the weather? It changes about every five minutes. This New Zealand packing list will help you plan for sunshine, rain, wind, and a whole lot of adventure—because you’ll likely experience all of the above! I’ll share what I packed, what I wished I’d brought, and tips for dressing both for the cities and those jaw-dropping landscapes.

What’s the weather like in New Zealand in the Spring?

Spring in New Zealand (September-November) is a season of wild variety. You can go from crisp mornings to warm afternoons, with a splash of rain or snow in the higher elevations. Expect daily highs between 55-65°F (13-18°C), but the weather is famously unpredictable. If you’re visiting both the North and South Islands, you’ll want to prepare for a wider range—pack for rain, wind, and sunshine, all in the same day! We went in late November, when that transition from Spring to Summer was happening, and yes, it was still chilly! That’s why I created this New Zealand packing list, so you can be prepared for what the variable weather will throw at you.

What should you wear in New Zealand?

New Zealand is an active, outdoorsy destination, and the locals reflect that with a laid-back style. You’ll see a mix of athleisure, hiking gear, and casual streetwear, especially in smaller towns like Queenstown. In cities like Christchurch, the vibe leans a little more polished (think jeans and a cute jacket or flowy dress). If you live in the United States, we got Colorado vibes for the dresscode.

Dressing Tips for New Zealand

Exploring Cities

I recommend a smart casual style for bigger cities like Christchurch and Auckland. A jacket, scarf, and comfortable boots will serve you well on your New Zealand packing list. Don’t forget a cute top beneath so you can capture your best self living her best life on those rooftop bars in Christchurch!

Hiking

Layers are everything. I lived in leggings/jeans + long sleeve shirt + waterproof jacket. Bring waterproof shoes if you plan to hike (you should!). Many trails can be muddy or wet, even in spring. We just so happened to have a downpour on our tour to Milford Sound (it was gorgeous btw) and my feet were SOAKED in my tennis shoes.

New Zealand Packing List

Shoes + Boots

  • Waterproof hiking shoes

  • Casual sneakers for cities (these are my go to)

  • Sandals or slides for warmer afternoons or going out at night (optional, cute tennis shoes will do too)

Jeans + Pants

  • Jeans for most activities or going out in the cities

  • Leggings or hiking pants

  • Flowy dress or two for wine regions (you should definitely do a wine tour)

Tops + Sweaters + Jackets

  • Base layer tees (I am obsessed with these)

  • Long-sleeve shirts

  • Fleece or puffer jacket

  • Waterproof or rain jacket (non-negotiable, especially on the South Island. Here’s my recommendation!)

Scarves + Accessories

  • Hat (wind and sun protection, and the sun is STRONG)

  • Sunglasses (see above)

  • Swimsuit (for geothermal pools in Rotorua or hot springs! definitely not for the lake outside of Queenstown)

Toiletries

  • Regular toiletries (I adore this bag to keep them all in, it’s perfect when your hotel has zero counter space)

  • Conditioner—not all of our hotels had it

Electronics

  • Travel adapter (this is my fave)

  • Camera (New Zealand is gorgeous from every angle)

  • Kindle, book, or audiobook for long drives (I listened to most of an audiobook on our day trip to Milford Sound)

New Zealand Outfit Ideas

Here’s what I wore on our New Zealand trip to spark some ideas for your own New Zealand packing list. I’m a basic girlie, and since it was chilly, most of the time you couldn’t even see what was underneath my jacket. 🤣

Final Thoughts on What to Pack for New Zealand in Spring

If you take one thing away from the New Zealand packing list guide, let it be this. Prepare for everything, layer like a pro, and you’ll be ready to enjoy one of the most beautiful countries on Earth. And don’t forget your camera—you’ll need it every five minutes. Or two. Honestly I came back with far too many photos. 😅
